Gary Huggins has developed a truly unique business from small and unassuming beginnings.
Stewart Island Smoked Salmon was formed in June 2010 following some preliminary market sounding driven by the need to support the local restaurant he was operating, Church Hill. The restaurant business across New Zealand was suffering from the effects of recessional downturn. Tourist and visitor numbers to Stewart Island were on the decline, so Gary decided to take his much loved smoked salmon from the menu to the market place.
In June 2012 he moved the operation away from Church Hill to operate solely as Stewart Island Smoked Salmon Ltd on the island in his own premises, set up solely for the smoked salmon business.
He is very proud of the product and its authenticity, with many repeat customers loving the honesty of this unique product. The salmon is unashamedly marketed as an elite product as no other business or individual is producing and marketing smoked salmon directly from the island.
